Olecranon Fracture

Complete list of fracture information

The olecranon is the tip of the elbow you can feel under the skin. The main triceps muscle that straightens out your elbow is attached to it and it can pull the bone off the rest of the elbow in certain injuries. A fracture of the elbow typically leaves the patient unable to straighten the elbow unless treated.

Olecranon Fracture Symptoms

  • sudden pain in the elbow
  • The elbow joint swells
  • Inability to bend the arm at the elbow
  • Tenderness is present at the end of the elbow
  • Bruising around the elbow
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Numbness in one or more fingers

Olecranon Fracture treatment

  • Cast immobilization
  • Cancellous bone screw or two cortical bone screws are more commonly used.
  • Hook plate or tension band wiring of "8" suture is applied to comminuted fractures, external fixation may dispense with the early activities
  • Fractures block triceps tendon resection and angioplasty.
