Humerus Fracture Complete list of fracture information   Humerus Fracture The humerus is the large bone in the upper arm between the elbow and shoulder. There are three areas that are recogized as fracture points in the Humerus. Humerus shaft fracture is a break in the humerus in the main part of the humerus. Proximal humerus fracture is a break of the upper portion of the humerus near the shoulder. Distal Humerus fractures is a break in the lower part of the humerus near the elbow.

Treatment of Humerus Fractures

• The physician needs to determine if the fracture is complex or simple. This will help to determine if surgery in needed.
• If the fracture is stable, treatment may consist of only sling and swath immobilization for 6 weeks.
• Some physicians will utilize a “clam-shell” immobilizer if they feel that a sling and swath will not immobilize the fracture sufficiently.
• If the fracture is complex in nature, open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) surgery may be necessary.
