A hairline fracture is minor fracture in which the bone fragments remain in alignment, appearing on x-ray film as a fine line.

Symptoms of a hairline fracture include

pain that is usually severe and gets worse with time and movement
swelling
bruising
limitation of movement or inability to bear weight
numbness and tingling
paleness of the injured area

Treatment of a hairline fracture

For most hairline fractures you will be asked to follow the RICE protocol

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

In rare cases, a splint or cast may be needed temporarily especially it it is on a high stress area of a bone. Surgery may be needed for fractures that do not heal, or heal the wrong way.
