Can an injury lead to the onset of arthritis?

Hi,

Four years ago, I dislocated my knee and since then, I have experienced pain and discomfort when it rains or when it's cold and damp as well as general pain. Over the years the symptoms have gotten worse and sometimes the knee "grabs" as though it gets caught on the joint if that makes any sense. My knee does continue to partially dislocate if it is moved the wrong way, which causes more discomfort. I used to have a job that required standing for eight hours a day, which resulted in discomfort at the end of the day.

Long story short, I'm just wondering if the aforementioned symptoms could be arthritis related and if an injury such as a dislocation can bring upon the onset of arthritis. I am hoping not as I am only 23 years old, but it is something I have been wondering about and considering. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Simple answer

Trauma to a joint is the number one cause of osteoarthritis. This can be from an accident or the long term wear and tear on a joint or joints.
