Lichen Amyloidosis

Lichen Amyloidosis is deposits of amyloid on the outer layer of the skin. This usually produces purple looking bumps on the skin.

Lichen amyloidosis is a cutaneous condition characterized by the appearance of occasionally itchy lichenoid papules, typically appearing bilaterally on the shins.

Causes of  Lichen Amyloidosis

  • There is no particular cause.
  • It is related to unusual production of immunoglobulins by a type of immune cell called plasma cells.
  • A chronic infectious or inflammatory disease can lead to Amyloidosis Lichen.
  • Long term kidney dialysis say more than five years may become a serious cause.

Symptoms of Lichen Amyloidosis

  • Itchy skin
  • Multiple raised scaly red or brown skin spots
  • Plaques due to merging of skin spot

Treatment of Lichen Amyloidosis

The main treatment of lichen amyloidosis patients is usually aimed at controlling the itching. Antihistamines can help, as can skin creams with steroids and steroid injections into the lesions. Phototherapy with ultraviolet light may have a beneficial effect, as can application of dimethyl sulfoxide. Removal of the plaques through surgery is another possible treatment. Laser surgery, dermabrasion, and simple excision of the lesions can help resolve the issue temporarily. Generally, the rash returns, so surgery is not a permanent cure.
